India is a highly secular and diverse country. And when people move and settle from one state to another most of their cultural norms and realms are left behind, but not so the case with the south Indians. This is on-par with Iyers and Iyengars from Tamilnadu, please don’t retaliate and state this is not true for all South-Indians or Malayalis.
Wherever we go, we carry our tradition along and carve a niche for ourselves in the new surroundings. Listed below are ten such trademark attributes that can confirm you’re in the presence of a South-Indian household:
1) GOLD, GOLD AND MORE GOLD.
South Indian women wear more gold than any other. Not to talk about wedding ceremonies.
More than half of the world’s gold reserve is in South-India.
2) ABUNDANCE OF SILK AND SILK SAREES.
Women love adorning silk saris in south India. Be it chiffon or Kanjeevaram, they have it all.
Owning a silk sari is the trademark identity of South-Indian women.
3) COFFEE ADDICTS.
South Indians are addicted to coffee. And we don’t make coffee like others do, by default all of us possess coffee makers or filters, and make decoction to savor and relish Filter Coffee.
4) A PINCH OF HING IN EVERYTHING.
We love flavoring our dishes with a pinch of ‘Hing’ to make the flavor stand out.
5) EXUBERANCE OF DAIRY PRODUCTS.
South Indians love having Milk, cheese or Dahi in short Diary products in any form. Lack of dairy products is lack of life for us.
6) CORPULENCE OF GODS AND GODDESS FRAMES EVERYWHERE.
North Indians frame pictures of their gods and goddesses only in their puja rooms while we take the opportunity to showcase our divine devotion anywhere and everywhere. Be it the drawing room or the dining room, we have the Vinayagar or the Annalakshmi.
7) RICE OR IDLI/DOSA FOREVER.
Idli/Dosa is to South-Indians is what Roti is to North-Indians. Rice is the most staple food among Tamilians followed by Idli/Dosa. Ranging from family parties, day-to-day meals to big fat-Indians weddings, Idli/Dosa is a must.
8) ADVENT OF ‘AJWAIN’ WATER.
South Indians consume water along with Ajwain also called Jeeragam. This purifies water and aides in digestion.
9). EDUCATION IS EVERYTHING.
South Indians hon-our Education over anything else. And they judge people par their qualification. If you have MS or PhD, they would be happy to make you their son-in law 😀
10). COPIOUS AMOUNT OF COCONUT FOR EVERY MEAL.
South Indians use coconut or it’s products with every meal for it’s flavor or at-least as an add-on; if you get a whiff of coconut oil from your food, then you can bet on the fact that it is South Indian.
Also each and every South-Indian female will be well-versed in Carnatic music or Bharatnatyam and all South- Indian houses will have a dining floor and not a dining table etc. These are some of the cultural and orthodox practices that have been handed down since generations and is what that makes us stand different from others.
