CHOOSING A CAREER

CHOOSING A CAREER

And The Moment I declare, I am going to do Journalism, there are so many Oohs and aahs followed by sighs of impatience, and questions like how do you plan on living? Are you planning on marrying rich? Are you going to live on limited means all through your life? We live in a stereo-typed society that believes Journalists cannot strike Gold.

They fail to realize and accept that there is hope in the field of Journalism which can never be replaced. Studying in a Media-college gives you that ample advantage of knowing how much the world needs media and its resources. They picture offices to be an old or a cranky building with dusty old files and a fan spinning over-head. I would say the look of the offices would have changed but the enthusiasm keeps building one generation after another. The whole of the society has been working hard at me for the past months, throwing in random one-liners like, ‘you’ll have to be prepared for long hours’ ,’You will not be able to afford a luxurious lifestyle’ , ‘Journalism can only be a part-time career, you can never afford to make a living out of it, and so on. They fail to understand my passion and my calling. After all you should pursue a career, with what really interests you? Isn’t it?

They believe that Indian women are created either to adorn the role of a house-maker or an engineer at the maximum. What is -the big deal with engineering anyway?

The society perceives that women do not want to undertake professions like journalism which is why the field does not reflect equality. This can even be proven with statistics and is highly sexist. I want the world to take female journalists seriously. The truth is that gender does not matter when it comes to career and no matter what the society thinks of us, we should pursue what suits us the best!! There are women in the field who have been challenging stereotypes and proved to be one of the best candidates regardless of what the world says. Upbringing can influence but not change people from what they actually are.
Journalism is not just about editing and writing articles. And there has been a huge evolution in the same for the past half-century with mass media and communication creating endless platforms in this field. With the onslaught of technology and other inventions of the like, it has become easy for journalists to update and acquaint themselves with skills of development and integration. In these days of high level of activism and advocacy it is also necessary to uphold one’s virtue and honesty and must try not to become too commercialized with the demand in peripheral areas.
We Live in an era where knowing and presenting Information is the most ’IN’ thing and almost everyone wants to be aware of what’s happening in and around them. Pertaining to the requisites, media has become the major source of all kinds of information from newspapers, magazines, TV, radio, Journalists are the ones who influence and are actually responsible for all the information. Within them they hold the power to surpass, influence and control the masses with first-hand information which makes the position, a highly responsible one and hence the pioneers of the same should be ones, who have the capability to inculcate, all qualities like being a good writer, editor, photographer, designer and story teller. It is also highly necessary to be ethical and to be able to defend your stance and to protect your character. The journalists, Learn the best lessons in Life!! And eventually evolve to be people who can gauge how to look at situations, problems and issues from various perspectives. Journalism can make you a better person, you will be the one who meets all kinds of people and problems at your doorstep and will also be the one who can monitor and be a helping-hand for them. The value of the same will increase, when you know how to write report and edit efficiently. When one possesses a highly inquisitive mind and good communication skills, Journalism is easily the destined calling.
A career in journalism will easily incorporate various aspects of making-a-living and will train you in how to be able to operate in a network and build relationship with people from all walks of life. Personally, A career in journalism would mean that I would be able to question on behalf of everyone and uncover new answers even to proven facts which is what makes it exciting and worth-while all the more.
When one is able to present ideas clearly with amicable clarity, relevance, brevity, consistency and accuracy and has fair competency with all media management tools, writing is surely a career that is to be undertaken. But is also necessary to remember that there are no born writers and we should never stop learning. Regularly equipping ourselves with all kinds of professional practices and standards is necessary and can get better only by practice.
Passion and Practice can only define the art of journalism. Even when you are forced into a tough situation you should be able to report concisely and effectively which is why it is necessary to reinforce the tact of being able to adapt yourself, according to the situation you face.
I want to be the Voice of the people, as I know there will always be audience for well-written and informative news all around the world. I want to take up the issues and responsibilities that will enable us to break the barriers of confined journalism and help the public hear and react to all kinds of issues and events that are presently beyond the boundaries of our day-to-day lives. Though journalism is a highly competitive career option and makes it’s pursuers to work under highly difficult situations, and extracts to perform at the highest level, will make professionals out of amateurs and yield fulfillment eventually.
In short, Pursuing Journalism as a career will make my life, Worth Living!!
